Summary

The long-awaited first autobiography by national treasure Bob Mortimer。

Bob Mortimer's life was trundling along happily until suddenly in 2015 he was diagnosed with a heart condition that required immediate surgery and forced him to cancel an upcoming tour。 The episode unnerved him, but forced him to reflect on his life so far。 This is the framework for his hilarious and moving memoir, And Away。。。

Although his childhood in Middlesbrough was normal on the surface, it was tinged by the loss of his dad, and his own various misadventures (now infamous from his appearances on Would I Lie to You?), from burning down the family home to starting a short-lived punk band called Dog Dirt。 As an adult, he trained as a solicitor and moved to London。 Though he was doing pretty well (the South London Press once crowned him 'The Cockroach King' after a successful verdict), a chance encounter in a pub in the 1980s with a young comedian going by the name Vic Reeves set his life on a different track。 And now, six years on, the heart condition that once threatened his career has instead led to new success on BBC2's Gone Fishing。

Warm, profound, and irrepressibly funny, And Away。。。 is Bob's full life story (with a few lies thrown in for good measure)。

Absolutely fantastic!!!…。。had me in stitches on more than one occasion。 Read the/listen to the Gone Fishing book if you can……it’s about fishing obviously, but there is so much more to it than that。

I, on the whole, enjoyed this book。 He's a nice, lovable fella。 His take on his recent ish heart surgery and problems where an enlighting and interesting read。 However majority of the time didn't grip me and have me rushing to read more。 Expected more fishing tales。 Worth a read。 I, on the whole, enjoyed this book。 He's a nice, lovable fella。 His take on his recent ish heart surgery and problems where an enlighting and interesting read。 However majority of the time didn't grip me and have me rushing to read more。 Expected more fishing tales。 Worth a read。 。。。more

A great read。 The book had me laughing and smiling throughout。 Bob and is now famous mates seem really genuine nice blokes, that I would love to sit for hours with chatting, drinking and having a good laugh。 Bob is so humble and a bit clueless about his celebrity status and how funny he really is。

Caitlin

Loved it, so funny but also a lil sad but in a good way。 The letter to his mum did make me cry a lil what a sweet likkle man。

Constantin Ursu

Funny guy, had a life well lived, despite the bad choices along the way。 Good British humour。

Leighton Taylor-Jones

A brilliant down to earth autobiography that shows a insight into the real Bob Mortimer。 The North East has never been described in such glory since the novels of Catherine Cookson。

Michele

Just brilliant 🤩

Andrew Learoyd

Sublime。

Stephen Taylor

You should read this book。 You really should。

I listend to this book through audible。 Read by Bob himself。 I was never a massive fan of his early work。 The madcap world of Vic and Mortimer was watcheable and funny at times, but never my favourite。 Bobs appearances on Would I lie to you and Gone Fishing however have endeared him as a british heirloom。 and in this book he narrates his life story which is always interesting and entertaining。 I recommend it to Bobs fans。

Ali Devine

Absolutely brilliant, audible version was outstanding, listening to Bob tell his story

Faith

I really enjoyed the humanity and humility of this autobiography, Bob clearly painfully shy found himself thrust into the world of stage and tv performance and all that accompanies success but at the heart of his account is the vital relationships of friends and family。 It is a “hat tipped “ in recognition of all of these people in his book。

Cute funny listen! I recommend listening to this audiobook narrated by Bob Mortimer。 It’s made me want to watch all his older material and look into gone fishing with Paul WhiteHouse。 I particularly enjoyed listening to bob’s career as a solicitor and appreciated all the voices he put on for the various people he mentions throughout the book。 Go and listen to this book of you want a lighthearted laugh。

Anita Birtles

Really enjoyed this funny autobiography although some of the would I lie to you bits are difficult to see the truth。 Bob Mortimers odd sense of humour totally come across in thebook

Eric

Very funny! Peak Bob :) Very easy read, helped me back into reading after a time of no real reading。。。

Chris Cummins

Really enjoyed the book but Bob’s reading was just that。 Reading。 Pausing the wrong places, little reaction, the last few chapters about people in his life that he loved felt more real。

Jane

Enjoyable read, engaging writer。

I have this kinda outdated self-narrative that "I don't really like autobiographies"。 I don't know why。 If I interrogate it, I adore anecdotes and tales so it scarcely holds water。Bob Mortimer is a bit of a local and personal legend。 When I was young and my parents divorcing I would watch Big Night Out with my Dad and right up until his death would quote the familiar catchphrases to one another。 And I think my Dad knew Mortimer was a well educated man and so respected the indulgence of bizarre, I have this kinda outdated self-narrative that "I don't really like autobiographies"。 I don't know why。 If I interrogate it, I adore anecdotes and tales so it scarcely holds water。Bob Mortimer is a bit of a local and personal legend。 When I was young and my parents divorcing I would watch Big Night Out with my Dad and right up until his death would quote the familiar catchphrases to one another。 And I think my Dad knew Mortimer was a well educated man and so respected the indulgence of bizarre, surreal and outright childish comedy。Listening as an audiobook that I borrowed from Middlesbrough library meant that I had the pleasure of hearing Mortimer narrate this himself。 He is a fantastic writer and lost nothing of his unique personality in committing it to 'paper'。It felt like a privilege to have such a heartfelt and personal insight into Bob's life and I found myself in tears on multiple occasions。 Both when laughing and when moved。Barely a chapter passed which I didn't silently reflect on how much my Dad would have enjoyed this autobiography。 I feel lucky to have enjoyed it in his place and it evoke such strong memories of my time with my Dad。 So thanks for that, Bob。I borrowed this audiobook digitally from my local library and urge you to do the same to keep up demand and support for libraries。 。。。more

Hilarious, heartbreaking at times and again hilarious。

Liam Sanders

Really enjoyable read。 Almost every page had a story that put you alongside Bob during a part of his life。 He has the ability to make the mundane funny and the obscure even more funny。

Jen-Jen

This man makes the absolute abominable decision to put the milk in first for a cup of tea。A part from that hes a lovely bloke。

Suki Panesar

Absolutely brilliant! Loved every page, such an interesting life。 How amazing that such simple decisions can impact great life changes。 I have always been a big Vic and Bob fan but now even more so!

Peter Foster

A ordinary life with the drama and trauma many have seem。 But it shaped him。 I ended up drawing the conclusion that life has a lot of luck in it his career has hinge points that had a lot of luck in them。 Thoroughly enjoyable read and having come to this from Gone Fishing TV series I had an inclination that it was a story of one big turning point and his fame broadly was。

Kate Park

Listened to the audio book and it was an absolute delight, the books genuine, from the heart (no pun intended) and offers a glimpse not an intrusion into Bob Mortimer’s story to date。 The books reflective and offers the same kind of feel to the gone fishing tv series with Paul Whitehouse which always left me feeling all warm and fuzzy。 Plenty of laughs and a little bit of sadness。 Thank you Bob Mortimer!
